ХОД УРОКА

I . Организационный момент и речевая деятельность.

Teacher - Dear friends, We are glad to see you at our lesson “Healthy Living Guide.” We hope you’ll enjoy it.

Today we’ll speak about health, good and bad habits.

What good habits do you know?

Pupils: (предполагаемые ответы)

  1. sleeping seven or eight hours
  2. getting up early
  3. eating breakfast
  4. a healthy diet (following a diet)
  5. eating low fat food
  6. eating high fibre food
  7. eating wholemeal bread
  8. exercising
  9. going in for sport

Teacher – What bad habits do you know?

Pupils: (предполагаемые ответы)

  1. drinking alcohol
  2. taking drugs
  3. smoking
  4. environmental influence
  5. eating more red meat
  6. sleeping much or little
  7. physical inactivity

II. Аудирование текста.

Teacher - Some bad habits are really deadly. Now listen how Christian Church set down the seven deadly Health sins. (Аудиозапись). Answer the questions: What are the 7 deadly sins? And what are modern health sins?

The phrase “a deadly sin” arose from the Gospel. In scholastic teaching there were 7 deadly sins: 1.

Envy 2. Covetousness 3. Lechery. 4. Gluttony. 5. Pride. 6. Sloth and 7. Anger. But they were not meant to be taking literally.

Few of us will die of pride, envy or anger. There are modern health sins which are in fact more deadly.

Two of them – obesity and physical inactivity – are known from ancient times. They are joined by the

modern bad habits: smoking and drinking alcohol, sleeping too much or too little, eating between meals and skipping breakfast. These poor habits could double the chance of dying or lead to different diseases.

Of course sleeping too much or too little, snacking and skipping breakfast are not quite as deadly as smoking, obesity and drinking.

Regularity in life promotes your health: 1. Sleeping seven or eight hours 2. Getting up early 3. Eating breakfast 4. A healthy diet 5. Regular meals is really a good way to live.

III. Монологическая речь.

Teacher - Our health depends on many things:

- the food we eat;

- our good and bad habits;

- our physical activity.

Some people care about their health, others don’t: they have bad health habits.

- What do our “doctors” say about bad habits?

- How does our environment influence our health?

- What are our local problems?

Doctor 1. - We are the caretakers of the earth. We know that polluted air, water and land are harmful to plants, animals and people. We found out that 17 districts of our region are severely polluted. The people of Krasnodar and other towns of the Krasnodar region suffer from smog. The local industries pour their waste into the rivers Kuban, Laba, into the water of the Black Sea. Many purifying systems don’t work well.

Every year Krasnodar region plants pollute the atmosphere with harmful substances. There are very dangerous wastes. They go into the air and are carried by the winds for great distances. It is difficult to breathe.

60 % of the air pollution is caused by different means of transport: cars, trucks, buses. Public anxiety has grown after the Chernobyl disaster which resulted in radio-active pollution of vast territories including the Krasnodar region.

Then we must remember that when we use aerosol sprays, we destroy the ozone layer which protects the Earth from the dangerous ultraviolet rays of the Sun.

Teacher – What does Doctor say about drinking alcohol?

Doctor 2 - An alcoholic beverage is rapidly absorbed in the stomach and intestines and alcohol rises to high levels in the blood in short time.

From the blood the alcohol is distributed to all parts of the body and especially has a pronounced effect on the brain. The drunker gradually becomes less alert, awareness of his environment, becomes dim and lazy, coordination deteriorates and sleep is facilitated.

Alcoholics suffer of deficient diet. Cirrhosis of the liver is associated with chronic alcoholism, as are numerous forms of brain damage. Alcoholics suffer high accident, lowered resistance to infection, loss of employment and family life and a reduction of life span of the 10–12 years.

Teacher - And what does Doctor say about cigarette smoking?

Doctor 3 - Cigarette smoking is not only related to the development of lung cancer. The risk of developing of these cancers in creases with the number of cigarettes smoked per day. Smoking is also a prime risk factor in cardiovascular system diseases. Nicotine raises blood pressure. Smokers have higher levels of carbon monoxide in their blood than non-smokers. Smoking is the disease of lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, emphysema and other tobacco-related diseases.

Don’t smoke, it looks smart in old movies. But that’s just a clever form of advertising. Smoking is unhealthy. It’s unpleasant and harmful to non-smokers, too, and a serious fire risk. It’s offensive in public places like cafes and schools. Any form of addiction or excess is unhealthy, whether it’s tobacco, alcohol, drugs, or sugary things. It may be a sign of not growing up and not being able to cope.

Do you know that 16th of November is the day when people all over the world quit smoking?

Do you know that every year 3 million people die of smoking?

Do you know that your life is 25% shorter if you smoke?

Teacher – What does our Doctor say about taking drugs?

Doctor 4 - Drugs are used in treating, diagnosing and preventing disease. Drugs are used in cancer therapy. Most drugs today are products of chemical synthesis, but numerous drugs of plant, animal, mineral and microbial origin are still important.

The history of nonmedical drug consumption is ancient. Just as alcohol many other psychotropics have been accepted in different societies.

Using of drugs include general risks such as the danger of infection by the AIDS virus and other diseases that can be communicated by use of nonsterile reedles or syringes when drugs are taken by injection.

Some forms of drugs are injected or inhaled through the nose. One form of cocaine is generally smoked. The purchase, sale and nonmedical consumption of all drugs are illegal, and these psychotropic drugs can be contained only on the black market.

Solvent abuse commonly known as “glue-sniffing” is a growing problem, especially among teenagers and even younger children.

IV. Аудирование текста.

Teacher - Three teenagers Helen, Bob and Kate are talking about their attitude towards health. Listen to the stories and answer the following questions. (Аудиозапись) 1) Why does Helen look great? 2)What does she think about her future? 3) What does Bob look like? 4) What health sins has he got? 5) How does he justify himself? 6) What is he afraid of? 7) What does Kate like in her friends?

    1. Helen: I am not going to be a supermodel. But I think it is very important to be fit and healthy and look nice. Some firms dont’t employ people who are overweight or who are smokers. I agree with that because smoking affects other people’s life, too. I pay a lot of attention to my health.I try to eat only low-fat food, more fruits and vegetables which are rich in vitamins and less sweets. I don’t smoke. I don’t want to have unhealthy skin and teeth. Besides, I have been doing aerobics for a year. I feel great. And all my friends think I look great.
    2. Bob: I have no problems with my health though I am a smoker and a bit overweight. I like smoking. It helps me to relax. I have been smoking since I was 12. All my friends are smokers. I don’t want to be the odd one out. I know all the facts, but you only live once, don’t you? So why not enjoy yourself? As for dieting I think it is very dangerous. You are what you are. It is impossible to change. Besides, I like chocolate bars, ice cream and the like. Why should I give up such tasty things? Eat only cucumbers? Never! Of course I have some problems with my skin and hair, but I don’t want to change.
    3. Kate: I think people should choose for themselves if they want to be healthy – it's their life, it's their bodies. They are free to decide. It is not very good to think to much about your appearance but it is good to think about your health. I don't pay much attention to my friends' health habits. My friend Willie likes sweets, he is pleasantly fat and I like him, he is very clever. He is good at the computer. And Dennis is very sporty. He has been exercising all his life. He isn't as clever as Willie but he is nice. I like to have different people with different likes and dislikes as my friends.

Patient - Yes, doctor. Yesterday I was at the disco. After that we went to my friend’s house and I drank a drop of wine and smoked some cigarettes.

Author: Once an old man went to see a doctor. He said:

Old man: I am not very well. I feel tired, doctor.

Author: The doctor examined him and said:

Doctor: You must have a rest. Go to the country for a month, go to bed early, drink milk, go for long walks and smoke only one cigar a day.

Old man: Thank you very much. I’ll do everything as you say.

Author: A month later the man came to the doctor again.

Doctor: How are you? I am very glad to see you. You look much better.

Old man: Oh, doctor. I am quite well now. I had a good rest. I went to bed early. I drank milk. I went for long walks. Your advice helped me. But you told me to smoke one cigar a day and that one cigar a day almost killed me at first. It’s not a joke to begin smoking at my age.
