Speaker 1. Good morning, dear friends!
I am happy to greet all the participants of our meeting.
We have met today to speak to each other and to learn more about each other.
The aim of our meeting is also to change views on the problems which our teenagers face.
We expect every participant to express his opinion on different problems openly.
Theme of our meeting is “Is it easy to be young”?

Speaker 2. The changes of our society, the system of our life force young people to choose their own lifestyle. On the one hand, our society agrees that 15-17– year old people are old enough to be responsible for what they do and give them quite a lot of freedom and rights. On the other hand, most adults think that teenagers are too young to be taken seriously. This misunderstanding produces many problems.
Let me introduce our guests from the USA: John Smith and Ann Smith.

John Smith: Thank you. We are also glad to have a chance to speak to you. The people of our country are very much interested in the life of your teenagers.

Ann Smith: Oh, the theme is very serious. Today it is fashionable to speak about teenage problems. A few years ago alcohol, drugs, fights, killings and other kinds of violence were more problems for adults than for young people. What problems worry young people in your country?

P. It seems to me that we have the same problems.

Speaker 1. And what about you NN? Have you any problems?

P. Oh, my problems are my parents. They always say “No”. Everything about us, our hair, our music, our clothes, the way we talk all are considered bad.

Р. When you are 16, you want to know who you are and try out all sorts of options.
The way you look, the way you dress will tell you something about the person you need to be.

P. In many ways the elder generation cannot understand the younger. Besides the youth always tend to change the world.

P. You’re telling me! I quite like my Mom and Dad, but they are always ready to criticize me. “Don’t do this! You can’t do that! ” It’s often really hard to put up with.

P. But as for me, my parents always understand me. I share my problems with them very often.

Speaker 1. It’s great.

Speaker 2. No doubt, the teen’s problems will increase. And young people should feel that they are cared for.

Speaker 1. Yes, you are right. To protect children’s rights the United Nations has worked out an international agreement called the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. It gives you different rights. Look at them. They are on your desks. What rights do you have?

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

All children have the right to non-discrimination. (Article 2.)
Children have the right to life. (Article 6.)
All children have the right to name and nationality at birth. (Article 7.)
Children have the right to express their views. (Article 12.)
Children have the right to meet other people. (Article 15.)
Children have the right to privacy. (Article 16.)
Children have the right to information. (Article 17.)
Children have the right to protection. (Article 19; 32.)
Disabled children have the right to take a full and active part in everyday life. (Article 23.)
Children have the right to health and health care. (Article 24.)
Children have the right to education and development. (Article 28; 29.)
Children have the right to leisure. (Article 31.)

P. It’s very interesting to know that children have the right to express their views (ART 12).

P. It means that children can say what they think. What they say must be listened to carefully.

P. And what about article 16? It says that children have the right to privacy.

P. May I speak? I want to say that nobody can open children’s letters and listen to their phone calls.

P. The Convention says that all children have the right to life and protection. But I’m afraid the Convention can do nothing about war and cruelty. These are the biggest problems that concern young people.

P. I can’t but agree that to have the right to life and protection is very important. But in my opinion, the convention is useless. All adults do is talk: they can’t be forced to put needs of children ahead of their own.

P. I am sure, the Convention is great and will bring children more rights. For the first time children have a document with to work together on their problems.

P. The Convention doesn’t interest me; it’s too complicated. I doubt whether it can give children real rights.

Speaker 1. Of course, each of us can have his own opinion but it seems to me everybody must know his rights and duties.

Speaker 2. And now I’d like to know how do you spend your free time?

P. As for me, I enjoy listening to music

P. What sort of music do you like listening to?

P. I can’t say for sure. It may be rock ‘n’roll and blues. Sometimes I prefer techno. It depends.

P . How right you are. I think that music we listen to express our feelings at the moment.

Speaker 1. Can you tell me what styles of music are popular in your country [USA]?

Guest. As far as I know most young people like pop music but there are teenagers who prefer rap or punk rock. And what about you?

P. As for me I am fond of symphony music.

P. I am crazy about acid rock.

P. But don’t you agree that this music is thought to be aggressive and violent?

P. Yes, it’s true. It is designed to shock. But tastes differ. Besides, it depends on youth group you belong to.

P. Do you mean some cultural groupings?

P. That’s right. It is a way for young people to express their individuality. They are rockers, hippies, bikers, hackers, punks, skinheads, mods, ravers, Goths.

P. Oh! I have heard about them and I know that they prefer different kinds of music. But I don’t know what it means “goths”.

P. Listen, I can explain. The members of this subculture wear the blackest black, with a lot of silver jewellery and have very black hair and look as thin and pale as possible. They gather together to read Bram Stoker and talk about being vampire, and about the end of the world.

P. And I know about hippies. Some classify these types of people like drug users and rock’n’roll funs, since their behavior differ from norms. They don’t keep to society’s standards and support a liberal attitude and lifestyle. They always want to change the world to the best. One of the greatest hippies was John Lennon.

Let’s sing a song “Imagine”.

Imagine there’s no heaven,
It’s easy if you try.
No bell below us,
Above us only sky,
Imagine all the people,
Living for today,
A-ha.
Imagine there’s no countries,
It isn’t hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
And no religion too,
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace, yu-huh.

You may say I’m a dreamer,
But I’m not the only one.
I hope some day you’ll join us,
And the world will be one.

Imagine no possessions,
I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
A brotherhood of man,
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world, yu-huh.

You may say I’m a dreamer,
But I’m not the only one.
I hope some day you’ll join us,
And the world will live as one.

Speaker 1. What is your attitude towards subcultures and fan clubs?

P. In my opinion Hippies sound just all right, because they want to change the world to the best. They are not violent.

Speaker 2. What does Ann have to say?

P. I don’t think being a hippie is very good. They take drugs. Their behavior differs from social norms. They don’t conform to society’s standards.

Speaker 1. You are quite right. Drugs are one of the most serious teen’s problems. The unpleasant side of drugs is degradation. All of them destroy people. They‘ve got that death tag on them.

Speaker 2. The Government surveys show that every fifth teenager who was arrested for criminal actions, was younger than 14 and could not be sent to prison. Almost half of teenagers have experience with drugs, alcohol and sex under age of 16. A lot of teenagers who have drug or alcohol addiction almost never believe that they are dependent.

John Smith. This problem is global for our country too. Here are some statistics:
– 211 teenagers are arrested for drug addictions;
– 437 teenagers are arrested for drinking.

Speaker 2. What’s your opinion about these problems?

P. Many people take time to talk about drugs, but never about alcohol. When adults do talk about it, they just say it’ really bad, and that’s the end of the conversation. I could live without alcohol. But if you go to a party, it’s better than taking drug.

P. I completely disagree with you. I think both drugs and alcohol are harmful for our health, especially for girls.

P. I would like to say that even in my town kids can get alcohol easily. I personally do not drink alcohol. I don’t think drinking is exciting. But I know some guys who do.

P. How awful! But there must be some reasons for that.
Speaker1 Well, teenagers experiment with alcohol for variety reasons. First, a lot of them, associate drinking with adulthood. Curiosity can be one of the motives for teen’s first try of alcohol.

P. Do you see any way to help them?

Speaker 2. A lot of young alcoholic are sent to special hospitals for the treatment, but sometimes without any success. I think there should be much more information about the danger of alcohol provided by mass media, schools. Parent can help a lot. Young people must have the feeling that somebody cares for them.

Speaker 1. Let’ sum up! Is it easy to be young?

P. My view is that being a teenager is great fun. Take it easy.

P. I don’t agree with you. It isn’t fun, it’s a duty. You have to deal with your own problems.

P. As for me I want to say that our lives have only just begun! How many interesting things are around us! And we are too young to see only bad sides of life.

Speaker 2. We thank everybody for participating in such an interesting and useful talk.

Speaker 1. Russian teenager is sporty as American teens are
Russian teenager, like American teenager, reads a lot.
Russian teenager thinks about health as American teens do.
Russian teenager prefers techno and rock music like teens in America.

Speaker 2. Nowadays we say:

NO DRUGS !!!
NO ALCOHOL !!!
